exploring wilderness medicine in Madrid, New Mexico

No other medical conference I’ve attended teaches the management of spider, tick, snake, bear, and shark bites, with speakers who have climbed Mount Everest and hiked Antarctica.

NEW MEXICO LAND OF ENCHANTMENT-highway sign

This post  features scenes from Madrid– no, not the one in Spain, the one in New Mexico.

My husband and I  were staying in nearby Santa Fe, where I attended a medical conference on wilderness medicine. I don’t practice in the wilderness, but this conference has fascinating lectures, covering topics not found in any other event. No other medical conference I’ve attended teaches the management of spider, tick, snake, bear, and shark bites, by speakers who have climbed Mount Everest and hiked Antarctica, among other exotic places.

Wild Hogs-the movie

As with  nearby Santa Fe and Taos, art rules in Madrid. Walking around, you may feel like you are on a movie set- and in a way, you are. The 2007 movie Wild Hogs was filmed here. ( This link opens to an affiliate, a purchase here pays this blog a small commission; thank you).

In the movie, 4 middle-aged men with ordinary lives  take on a wilderness of sorts-a crosscountry motorcycle trip to California-passing through New Mexico. Starring veteran actors John Travolta, Martin Lawrence, William H. Macy, and Tim Allen it, their misadventures create a true “crisis” of mid-life. Watch it for lots of laughs.

And at nearby Los Cerrillos, you can go horseback riding at the Broken Saddle Riding Co.
