Listeria in the news again

Two major food companies are voluntarily recalling products that contain spinach that may have been contaminated with Listeria prior to reaching their facilities. The products are not definitely known to be contaminated and so far no illnesses have been linked to eating the products . Still, with even a suspicion, a recall is the safest action. FDA Investigates Listeria monocytogenes in Ice Cream Products from Blue Bell Creameries

You’ve probably by now seen or heard about this in the news. Although few people have been affected, at least 3 deaths have been connected to this infection. Listeria is a rare but virulent bacteria that can cause classic “food poisoning”, that is diarrhea, fever, chills, muscle aches. Most healthy people can recover uneventfully but some are more susceptible to serious illness- elderly, small children, immune suppressed individuals.
